First Grade I Can Statements - FREEBIE CARDS

We all know that the core standards are important - as they guide what we teach every single day.
Many administrators in fact require that we have the standards and objectives posted every single day.
I love using I Can Statements to accomplish this. I have realized that having them presented in a student-friendly manner is also incredibly important because if children don't know what it is that they are supposed to be mastering, how can they take ownership of their learning?
You can post the standards you are working on each day in two minutes with pocket chart cards.
I have seen objectives written as full pages or even half pages, but with as many standards as we cover each day... I simply don't have the room to hang up such large posters. These come three on a page and are made to fit nicely in pocket charts. How easy is that?!
Before I teach a lesson, I quickly read the cards first, and then reread with my students. The kid-friendly definitions makes it so easy for them to understand, “Okay, so this is my job today! I need to master ______”
After I teach the lesson, I quickly review the cards and ask my students, “Can you do this now?”
Children need to know they are accountable for what we are teaching. If I do a quick check for understanding, they know what my expectation is.
This becomes routine in class, and soon enough the kids can take over their I Can statements!
COLOR CODED STANDARDS
The cards are all color coded by standard.
This makes it so easy to organize. You can change your cards daily, weekly or some even every month.
The first grade files come aligned to both the common core standards, and the Texas TEKS.
The science and social studies cards are aligned to the Texas TEKS standards as well.
