Reading & Writing Rock Stars - April FREEBIES
Plus, I’ll send you my FREE April lesson plans for kindergarten!
I am so excited about my new Read and Write like a Rock Star program!
I get asked a lot about how to tie reading and writing together, while focusing on fluency, comprehension, phonics, vocabulary, writing, etc.
Reading and writing go hand in hand, and writing is so important in kindergarten.
I'm making guided literacy easy for you with my new monthly packs.
I tell my kiddos that I want them to read and write like rock stars and they get all jazzed up!
A few tricks I have learned is using themed, high-interest materials.
I pre-teach vocabulary words and review sight words that students will be reading. Repetition builds confidence and fluency.
Planning my small group time used to be so time consuming, but now it is quick and easy every week.
I use three resources, and they all correlate with the same theme.
I am excited to share an entire FREE week of materials with you on this blog post!
You can see your own students read and write like rock stars.
ALL THE ACTIVITIES SHOWN IN THE VIDEO BELOW ARE FREE ON THIS BLOG POST!
Let’s get started!
This resource will transform how you teach small groups and literacy centers.
I use a new theme each week and the students love that they know what to expect and understand the format.
It is easy to keep them engaged.
Each monthly Read and Write like a Rock Star pack comes with 4 themes.
I teach one theme each week.
April means all things spring!
You can use these activities for:
Small Groups
Whole Group Instruction
Literacy Centers
Homework
..... and more!
A peek at how I teach!
I organize each monthly pack in a 3 pronged flexible folder using page protectors.
This makes it super easy to organize all the black lines and keep each theme together.
"Spring Animals" theme:
mini reader
comprehension activity
build and illustrate the sentence
write on your own
This entire week is FREE for you to print!
I put all the pages from each emergent reader into one pocket.
This saves on space and I can easily pull it when I need to make copies.
The sentence building and "Write it on Your Own" page go next.
I organize each of the four themes like this in the folder.
This way I stay organized and it is easy to see each activity to make copies when I need them.
No more searching through file cabinets!
Putting the activities into action - "In the Garden" theme
Comprehension Passages
I like to use these in small group settings to introduce the new theme each week.
Every student gets a page and we walk through our pre-reading activities such as discussing the vocabulary and pictures. To save on copies, you can laminate a few pages and reuse them with each group.
It is easy to differentiate with these reading passages within your small groups based on their skill level.
I read the passage first, then we read it together and finally they whisper read/buddy read.
I help students practice touching each word as we read it.
Finally, we answer the comprehension question(s) at the bottom.
Sentence Building
I copy these two pages front to back.
The pictures and vocabulary correlate with the weekly comprehension and mini readers.
We usually do these writing worksheets on Wednesday after they have had a chance to complete the comprehension page.
Seeing the pictures and vocabulary multiple times throughout the week builds confidence and fluency.
Students read and trace the sentence.
Then, they cut and match the words to paste them in order.
They love to "build" a sentence and illustrate a picture to match.
Finally, students flip their paper over and they write the sentence two times on their own.
Providing this scaffolding makes writing a complete sentence achievable for all of your students!
Mini Readers
We love doing our weekly mini readers!
We start doing our little books whole group together.
Once they understand my expectations and routine, this activity is easily moved to a literacy center.
We use these on Thursday or Friday, so students have already seen the vocabulary and pictures on the Sentence Building worksheet and Comprehension activity earlier in the week.
I read it to them, then we read it whole group chorally and then students practice reading to each other.
After this, they can trace the sentences and we answer the comprehension questions on the back page.
Students love to take their books home each week to read to their families!
The comprehension questions and sentence structure get progressively more difficult throughout the school year in each monthly pack.
Lesson planning made easy each week
Your students will be reading and writing rock stars each week with these activities.
Hands-on learning with little prep for you - each week use a different theme to teach vocabulary, sight words, comprehension, fluency, and writing.
Having the same routine each week means you spend so much less time explaining directions and expectations.
Students get right to work and can focus on the content of the lesson.
Watch their literacy skills take off, and their reading and writing will improve so much each week.
Your kiddos will be reading and writing like Little Rock Stars.
Plus, lesson planning and prep work is minimal for you! You can just print and teach.
How do I get my students to be excited to complete their assignments?
Once they complete an assignment, my kiddos can't wait to color in the star on their personal chart showing they did it.
Their incentive chart shows the four themes for the month with the reading passage, sentence writing and mini book.
Children love coloring and filling up their charts.
You can choose to give awards, recognition, a prize, etc. once they fill up their monthly star charts (optional.)
