  • Activity #8 - Letter Aa cut/paste and draw/write - FREE

  • Activity #9 - Onset & Rime

Of course we also continue to work on rules, routines and expectations throughout the day.

I am also finishing up our back to school assessments.

Let’s get started!

Today, instead of the centers I have been putting out in the morning, we start our morning work!

You’ll absolutely love this morning work - it is a total game changer.

This was actually the very first resource I ever created because I couldn’t find morning work that covered the exact standards we were working on each month that my students could be independent with.

The skills and format stay the same for multiple days in a row so they need very little direction or help.

Students are absolutely loving singing along with the embedded songs, figuring out our daily joke and participating in our morning meeting message.

This calendar kit truly has it all! It comes in both Google Slides and PowerPoint versions and it is editable to meet your needs.

A GLIMPSE OF DAY 5 IN KINDERGARTEN

My lesson plans will walk you through how I each these activities and how I have my entire day planned.

I want to set you up for success!

I read Peanut Butter and Cupcake, and then we make friendly cupcakes! This is a great opportunity to talk about feelings, attitude and friends. I walk around and students tell me why they are a good friend.

You can write it in highlighter for them to trace or just write it on the line for them.

This book is hilarious and is one of my favorites! Your kiddos will be laughing and asking you to read it again.

The cupcake activity is not free in this email course, but if you wish to make these with students you can purchase it HERE

We absolutely love using a poetry unit every month.

We read and memorize a new poem each month and this works on so many skills including left to right progression, sight words, 1:1 correspondence, and so much more.

The month of August is FREE so you can see how fun it is to incorporate a new poem each month into your daily circle/carpet time.

Some days I spend 3 minutes and some days I spend 10 minutes reading our poem.

They love to mix up the pocket chart cards and put them back in order. Repetition leads to mastery!

We do a to of the activities whole group, but then there are follow up writing/drawing activities too.

FREE PHONEMIC AWARENESS ACTIVITIES

If you have been following all of the buzz and discussion about the science of reading research, you’ll know how incredibly important it is to teach explicitly teach phonemic awareness and phonics.

Despite this research, I have found that many reading programs barely touch on these skills and skip right into teaching phonics.

Did you know that phonemic awareness is NOT phonics?

Phonemic awareness is 100% auditory… meaning we don’t use letters or words yet.

Yes! You read that correctly.

Phonemic awareness is 100% auditory (no letters or words) and it is absolutely critical in teaching students to become confident, fluent and successful readers.

Phonemic awareness is my #1 priority and focus in my small groups for almost the first half of the school year in kindergarten.

I create small group phonemic awareness binders (shown above) that makes it easy and fun for you to teach these critical skills.

CLICK HERE to purchase the complete program that teaches all 7 steps of phonemic awareness.

Teaching in small groups is probably my favorite part of the school day.

FREE RHYMING ACTIVITIES

Rhyming is one component of phonemic awareness.

This is such an important phonemic awareness skill to have, and it makes learning to read much easier if students have mastered this.

I love using Google Slides to teach whole group, and I am sending you this entire kit for free to try!

You’ll love the interactive pieces and audio that is embedded.

This video shows all of the Google Slides I use during the first month or two of school.

I plan on releasing new Google Slides bundles each month to target the exact skills we are working on!

I am emailing you the entire rhyming kit for FREE to use with your students.

After we do the rhyming slides who group, I follow up with these adorable rhyming flip books!

I am emailing these to you as well.

See how I teach rhyming HERE

My complete rhyming kit is included in my phonemic awareness curriculum linked above.

DAILY KINDERGARTEN READINESS WORKSHEETS

You’ll love how easy this daily program is to implement!

It covers so many basic skills we are working on at the beginning of the school year in kindergarten.

I start the program on the fourth day of school, and I am sending you a free week to try!

You can read more about the program HERE

We read Brown Bear, Brown Bear and this is always a class favorite.

There are so many fun activities you can do with this story.

Kiddos are so excited when we get to play Brown Bear and Friends Roll & Cover.

We play Roll and Cover throughout the year, so this is the perfect time to teach it!

Check your email for this fun game I am sending you! All you need is dice and color chips to cover the numbers.

I pair students up and they play together, or you can have students play by themselves.

SETTING AND MEETING GOALS

I am a huge believer in having children set goals, and then celebrating their hard work when they meet those goals!

I realized after my first year of teaching kindergarten that I never explained to children what our goals in kindergarten are.

We need to explicitly explain to students what our goals are - both academically and for behavior.

We also need to celebrate their hard work when they meet their goals!

They are SO excited to color their stars and fill up their charts throughout the year.

This is an easy and effective way to get parents involved too. I send a chart home with students and keep one at school.

I am emailing you both of these charts so you can set goals with your students too. You won’t believe the difference this makes!

MATH CENTERS

I introduce THESE MATH CENTERS to students today, and we use them for the first 6-8 weeks of school.

Students use these with my assistant while I am finishing up our back to school assessments.

I am sending you a FREE assessment to use with your students, and these math centers can be purchased HERE

FREE ALPHABET ACTIVITIES

I use these alphabet activities in our literacy centers, but during the first few days of school I am teaching students the routines and expectations for these activities so eventually they will become independent with them.

Today, we do letter Aa cut/paste and letter Aa draw and write, and I’ll be emailing you these activities to do with your students too!

If you love them, you can purchase my entire alphabet bundle HERE

Be sure to sign up for my FREE first week of school email course at the top of this page if you haven’t already done so!

I’ll be emailing you by daily plans along with so many free activities.
