Weather and Seasons - Primary Science Unit with FREEBIES
I absolutely love teaching about the weather and seasons.
There is so much for students to share and connect with, so they are engaged and excited to learn.
Unit 4 in my primary science series is all about the weather four four seasons.
I love incorporating beautiful, real-life picture slideshows, videos, hands on activities and worksheets. I am sharing free activities on this blog post!
Let’s get started!
This unit comes with 35 lessons that are outlined and organized for you.
You can use the unit exactly how I wrote it, or choose only the activities that fit your schedule.
Lesson 1
I start by showing this slide and five posters.
I ask students if they know what the four seasons are and we discuss their answers.
Students will remember anything you put to a tune. We sing this song throughout the whole unit!
Plus there are so many facts intertwined into this song… we love it!
I always have my students stand up when we do videos to get their wiggles out!
What Makes a Season is the perfect read aloud to start this unit. I can’t currently find it on Amazon Prime, but the video is below!
Lesson 2
Now we dive into learning more about each season.
You can start with any season you prefer (idea: start with the season you’re in now while teaching this unit!)
Each season is setup the exact same way for an easy routine.
I show the slide on the left first, and then the slide on the right.
Students have a coordinating activity page that they then fill out as we discuss the season.
They can get all the information from the slide and we discuss as a class.
This gives a great overview to get started with each season!
Then we move on to dive even deeper into the season.
Lesson 3
Now we dive deeper into spring!
Yesterday was a great overview, and today we learn about the weather, the months included in this season, the holidays, what people wear and do, etc.
The mini book matches the slideshow perfectly, and students absolutely love having their very own book about each season.
They love talking about the solar system and how the Earth moves with each new season.
Lessons 2-9 are all setup this same way (two lessons per season like shown above.)
Then dive deeper into each season!
Lesson 10
Now that we have background information about each season, we go into the reason we have seasons.
Students absolutely love seeing pictures of Earth and how it is tilted in its axis.
This is fascinating for children to learn about.
It is the tilt of the Earth that creates our seasons.
All of the visuals are super helpful for students to understand this.
I show the slides and the students use the second slide to fill out their vocabulary page.
Lesson 11
We dive deeper into how the Earth’s tilt creates our seasons. Today I show this slide and then we do the cut/paste activity.
Color and black/white versions are included.
Plus I created differentiated versions so students can label the seasons on their own or match the season words.
Lesson 12-15
Now that we have learned about each season, we review all four seasons. These adorable sorts are perfect for primary students!
They simply cut and paste the pictures based on whether they belong in that season or not.
The sorts come in both color and black and white.
Lesson 16
We do sorting again, but this time we look at children’s clothes.
Lesson 17-25
The children love to pretend to be meteorologists and talk about our local weather forecaster.
BONUS - DIGITAL WEATHER ACTIVITIES!
I created these activities in both PowerPoint and Google Slides.
When we start learning about the weather and meteorologists, we do these each day as a class and the kids love it!
Sing the weather song, add to the weather graph each day, create our own seven day forecast and more!
Lesson 26-27
Now that we know about meteorologists, we study the clouds!
I show these slides and students draw and fill out the All About Clouds activity page.
Then we go outside and look at the clouds. Each day after this, I ask the students what kind of clouds they see in the sky.
Next, we make clouds with shaving cream!
You can do this on their desks (it will clean their desks too) or get a blue piece of construction paper.
If you want the clouds to “stick and stay” for a couple days, you can add white glue to the shaving cream so you can display their clouds (they won’t stay the correct form for very long though.)
Lessons 28-35
Students get so excited to learn about extreme weather. First, I show each slide and the kids are glued to the slideshow.
They want to know everything about all of these events and share of course what they know and/or have seen.
This first video is short, but leads into other videos.
This next video goes into more details on how these storms form.
Please be sure to preview this video first as there are destructive photos shown.
After reading each slide and watching a few videos, each student gets their own mini book about extreme weather.
You can do the color version or give students the black and white version so they can color the pictures.
Now students are ready to write what they know about each extreme weather event.
Each day, we review one slide and students write on their
can, have, are graphic organizers.
This unit about weather and seasons come with so many engaging activities that the children love.
You do not have to follow the lessons as shown - you can pick and choose which activities to do!
There are enough activities included that you could even spread these activities throughout the school year and introduce each new season as it starts.
