Shared reading activities are an engaging way to learn how to read!
These units are perfect for preschool, pre-k and kindergarten.
We are learning concepts about reading: words have meaning, we read left to right across and down a page, recognizing that different letters create words, sentences and more!
We use monthly themed units to learn new vocabulary, sight words and practice reading sentences using:
Pocket chart words + sentences
Mini books
Vocabulary cards
Write the room
Sight word activities
Games
Google Slides
All the monthly units are formatted the same.
This helps you build a routine for every week and month, and students love knowing what to expect.
You won’t have to give directions every time, and students can become independent and use these activities in centers.
The sight words, pictures and vocabulary change each month, but the activities and format stay the same.
Here is a peek at my September Reading and Vocabulary unit:
On the first day, I introduce our new vocabulary words and sight words for the month.
You can show students the cards and/or the color vocabulary poster.
Then I place the words in the pocket chart and practice reading each word as I touch it.
Do this multiple times, and the children love reading in different voices (acting like mice, monsters, etc.)
I love using pocket chart sentences for so many reasons!
Students can visually see the word boundaries - the spaces between words.
These activities will take you an entire lesson.
It is important to remember that 4-6 year olds can generally only sit for direct instruction lessons for about 10-12 minutes.
The next day, we come back to our vocabulary, sight words and pocket chart sentences.
We practice reading the sentences again, and then I tell them we are going to play a game!
How to play:
I suggest starting with only one mixed up sentence in the pocket chart at a time.
Students will beg to play this game over and over again!
Now that students have had multiple opportunities to read these sight words and vocabulary words, we can move on to our mini books!
The mini books include a comprehension check, sight word practice and vocabulary activity.
We are working on so many reading skills with these kits each month.
I even include a BONUS FREE digital book.
To see how these work, watch the quick video below.
These are formatted for PowerPoint™ and Google Slides™ and the audio is embedded.
1. The first time though, simply click play on each slide and I will do the rest! The dots will appear under each word as I read aloud.
2. On the second half of the slides, there is no audio. You can choral read as a class when the dots appear under each word.
3. Finally, pass out the paper mini readers to student so they can read on their own. Build confidence, fluency and vocabulary!
Another way we practice our vocabulary words throughout the month is playing words around the room.
There are so many ways to play!
Hang the vocabulary cards around the room and students take their recording sheet and go on a hunt to find them!
They can write the words on their recording page, or if your children are not writing yet, there are a few options.
In September, I would choose two colors and place these little stickers on each one.
Students take those two color crayons and when they find the picture, they color it the correct color.
When teaching young children how to read, I have learned that engagement is absolutely key.
Learning should be FUN, and when students are paying attention and enjoying our activities, they will learn so much quicker.
You will love having these activities ready to go each month!
